CGT statement regarding the attacks on the United States

The CGT of France is deeply shocked by the horrifying attacks on New York and Washington. Men and women at work were the main victims.
It wishes to convey its most sincere condolences to their families and friends.

The CGT believes that no political commitment or demands can justify such barbarous acts. The CGT rejects the use of violence as a means to settle conflicts.

This disaster directly and painfully affects the entire US people. It also raises entirely new issues for its government and institutions. The international community as a whole should now realise that social, economic and political relations need to enter into a new era world-wide.
The CGT appeals to leading bodies, especially in the United States, to remain calm, act responsibly and resist any spiral of violence that could have the most serious consequences.

(The CGT has sent a message of support and condolences to the President of the AFL-CIO)
